Scope ofResearch
The department is committed to the integrated TCM and Western medicinediagnosis, treatment, scientific research and teaching of snoring (adenoidhypertrophy, chronic tonsillitis, tongue hypertrophy, etc.), tinnitus, deafnessand vertigo (nerve deafness, Meniere’s disease, vestibular neuritis, benignparoxysmal positional vertigo, etc.), nasal diseases (allergic rhinitis,sinusitis, nasal polyps, nasopharyngeal carcinoma), throat and voice diseases(including vocal cord polyps, laryngeal papilloma, laryngeal cancer,laryngopharyngitis). The discipline ranked 31st in China in 2023.

The department currently has 3 outpatient clinics and 2 wards with 60 beds,a medical team of 58 members, including 1 Guangdong famous TCM doctor, 2Shenzhen famous/excellent TCM doctors, 1 doctoral supervisor, 2 mastersupervisors, with an annual outpatient volume of more than 120,000 person-timesand over 2,000 discharges. It runs special clinics for allergic rhinitis,snoring, tinnitus, deafness and vertigo. With the support of Shenzhen “FamousDoctors, Hospitals and Clinics Project”, it introduced the team of ProfessorRuan Yan from the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of ChineseMedicine to improve clinical and research level. To inherit the academicthoughts of famous veteran TCM doctors, the department established the studioof national famous veteran TCM doctor Professor Xie Qiang from “Xujiang MedicalSchool”.
To give full play to the advantages of TCM, thedepartment has developed a series of in-hospital preparations and agreedprescriptions such as Rhino-Desensitizing Ointment, Yangxin Yishen Cong’erOintment, Yangyin Liyan Ointment, Jianpi Zhihan Ointment, Jingming Cong’erFormula, Biyuan Tongqiao Formula, Biqiu Zhiliu Formula, Compound Menthol NasalDrops and Sodium Bicarbonate Ear Drops. The department is equipped with vertigodiagnosis and treatment chair, STORZ high-definition nasal endoscope, LAICAsurgical microscope, low-temperature plasma surgery system, XiON electronicnasopharyngoscope, Lumenis CO2 laser surgery system and imported Germanintegrated consulting room. It performs specialized otorhinolaryngologysurgeries including tympanoplasty, mastoidectomy, ear cholesteatoma, minimallyinvasive endoscopic surgery for chronic rhinitis, deviated nasal septum, nasalpolyps, sinusitis and nasal cavity tumors. It performs plasma ablation forpediatric adenoid hypertrophy, laser and minimally invasive plasma surgery foradult snoring, vocal cord polyps, laryngeal papilloma and laryngeal cancer. Italso performs artificial stapes, cochlear implant and lateral skull base tumorsurgery.
It undertakes teaching tasks for The Chinese Universityof Hong Kong, The University of Hong Kong and Guangzhou University of ChineseMedicine. It has presided over and completed more than 10 provincial andmunicipal projects. It has edited 3 monographs published by People’s MedicalPublishing House and Science and Technology Press: Handbook of ClinicalPractice for TCM Otorhinolaryngology, TCM Characteristic Therapy forCommon Otorhinolaryngology Diseases, Integrated Traditional Chineseand Western Medicine Treatment of Allergic Rhinitis, and participated incompiling the 14th Five-Year Plan textbook Integrated Traditional Chineseand Western Medicine Otorhinolaryngology and other 5 monographs. It servesas deputy editor-in-chief of Chinese Journal of Integrated TraditionalChinese and Western Medicine in Otorhinolaryngology, a core journal.
Integrating Chinese andWestern medicine to treat stubborn diseases, with benevolent heart and skillsto protect people’s health. Looking forward, the department aims to build a“national key specialty”, deepen the coordinated development of “medicaltreatment, teaching, research and production”. Putting patients first,practicing the core philosophy of “Respect, Fraternity, Inheritance andInnovation”, it will build a “precise, full-cycle, warm” medical servicesystem.
