Department Establishment HistoryThe Department of Otorhinolaryngology was founded in 1982.

Department Honors

It is a construction unit of key TCM specialty in Guangdong Province, a Shenzhen TCM characteristic specialty, vice chairman unit of Otorhinolaryngology Branch of World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies, vice chairman unit of Otorhinolaryngology Branch and Folk Diagnosis and Treatment Technology Research Branch of Chinese Society of Traditional Chinese Medicine, vice chairman unit of Otorhinolaryngology Drug Research Professional Committee of China Association of Chinese Medicine, vice chairman unit of Otorhinolaryngology Branch of Guangdong Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine, vice chairman unit of Otorhinolaryngology Branch of Guangdong Society of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, chairman unit of Otorhinolaryngology Professional Committee of Shenzhen Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine.

Department Leadership

Professors Xu Hongqing, Zhou Chuanli and Li Hao successively served as administrative directors, making outstanding contributions to the department’s development. Professor Liu Yuanxian has been administrative director since 2015.

Scope of Research

The department is committed to the integrated TCM and Western medicine diagnosis, treatment, scientific research and teaching of snoring (adenoid hypertrophy, chronic tonsillitis, tongue hypertrophy, etc.), tinnitus, deafness and vertigo (nerve deafness, Meniere’s disease, vestibular neuritis, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, etc.), nasal diseases (allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, nasal polyps, nasopharyngeal carcinoma), throat and voice diseases (including vocal cord polyps, laryngeal papilloma, laryngeal cancer, laryngopharyngitis). The discipline ranked 31st in China in 2023.

Department Operations

The department currently has 3 outpatient clinics and 2 wards with 60 beds, a medical team of 58 members, including 1 Guangdong famous TCM doctor, 2 Shenzhen famous/excellent TCM doctors, 1 doctoral supervisor, 2 master supervisors, with an annual outpatient volume of more than 120,000 person-times and over 2,000 discharges. It runs special clinics for allergic rhinitis, snoring, tinnitus, deafness and vertigo. With the support of Shenzhen “Famous Doctors, Hospitals and Clinics Project”, it introduced the team of Professor Ruan Yan from the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine to improve clinical and research level. To inherit the academic thoughts of famous veteran TCM doctors, the department established the studio of national famous veteran TCM doctor Professor Xie Qiang from “Xujiang Medical School”.

To give full play to the advantages of TCM, the department has developed a series of in-hospital preparations and agreed prescriptions such as Rhino-Desensitizing Ointment, Yangxin Yishen Cong’er Ointment, Yangyin Liyan Ointment, Jianpi Zhihan Ointment, Jingming Cong’er Formula, Biyuan Tongqiao Formula, Biqiu Zhiliu Formula, Compound Menthol Nasal Drops and Sodium Bicarbonate Ear Drops. The department is equipped with vertigo diagnosis and treatment chair, STORZ high-definition nasal endoscope, LAICA surgical microscope, low-temperature plasma surgery system, XiON electronic nasopharyngoscope, Lumenis CO2 laser surgery system and imported German integrated consulting room. It performs specialized otorhinolaryngology surgeries including tympanoplasty, mastoidectomy, ear cholesteatoma, minimally invasive endoscopic surgery for chronic rhinitis, deviated nasal septum, nasal polyps, sinusitis and nasal cavity tumors. It performs plasma ablation for pediatric adenoid hypertrophy, laser and minimally invasive plasma surgery for adult snoring, vocal cord polyps, laryngeal papilloma and laryngeal cancer. It also performs artificial stapes, cochlear implant and lateral skull base tumor surgery.

It undertakes teaching tasks for The Chinese University of Hong Kong, The University of Hong Kong and Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine. It has presided over and completed more than 10 provincial and municipal projects. It has edited 3 monographs published by People’s Medical Publishing House and Science and Technology Press: Handbook of Clinical Practice for TCM Otorhinolaryngology, TCM Characteristic Therapy for Common Otorhinolaryngology Diseases, Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Treatment of Allergic Rhinitis, and participated in compiling the 14th Five-Year Plan textbook Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Otorhinolaryngology and other 5 monographs. It serves as deputy editor-in-chief of Chinese Journal of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine in Otorhinolaryngology, a core journal.

Integrating Chinese and Western medicine to treat stubborn diseases, with benevolent heart and skills to protect people’s health. Looking forward, the department aims to build a “national key specialty”, deepen the coordinated development of “medical treatment, teaching, research and production”. Putting patients first, practicing the core philosophy of “Respect, Fraternity, Inheritance and Innovation”, it will build a “precise, full-cycle, warm” medical service system.
